Zambia is experiencing a wave of transformation infrastructure and energy projects aimed at driving economic growth and improving connectivity. Here’s a closer look at some of the most notable developments set to shape the nation in 2024 and 2025:
Lusaka–Ndola Dual Carriageway
The Lusaka–Ndola road, a key trade route connecting Zambia’s capital to the Copperbelt region, is undergoing a major upgrade into a dual carriageway. With a project value of ZMW 11.54 billion, this development is expected to enhance road safety and streamline trade along this vital corridor. Construction began in May 2024, with completion projected within 36 months.
Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP)
Shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Kariba Dam is a cornerstone of the region’s hydroelectric power supply. To address structural concerns, an extensive rehabilitation project valued at ZMW 8 billion is underway. Significant progress has already been made, with excavation and concreting milestones achieved in 2024. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, ensuring the dam continues to provide reliable energy for the region.
Choma Solar Power Station
Zambia is diversifying its energy sources with the development of the ZMW 1.3 billion Choma Solar Power Station in Southern Province. The 60 MW photovoltaic solar plant, paired with a 20 MWh battery energy storage system, is set to boost the nation’s renewable energy capacity. Construction began in June 2024, with commissioning expected by September 2025.
Maamba Collieries’ 300 MW Coal-Fired Power Plant
To address energy shortages, Maamba Collieries is constructing a ZMW 8 billion coal-fired power plant. The facility, which will generate 300 MW of power, is slated for completion within two years. This project underscores Zambia’s efforts to stabilise it’s energy supply amidst increasing demand and the effects of droughts on hydropower generation.
Lubambe Copper Mine Expansion
The mining sector remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s economy. China’s JCHX Mining has committed ZMW 6 billion to expand the Lubambe Copper Mine. This includes the construction of a new shaft to access deeper copper reserves, which will significantly increase production and extend the mine’s lifespan.
Rehabilitation of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) Railway
A trilateral agreement between Zambia, Tanzania, and China has initiated the rehabilitation of the TAZARA railway. The project aims to revitalise the 1,860 km rail network, which is crucial for transporting minerals and goods to East African ports. This upgrade is set to strengthen trade ties and improve regional connectivity.
Kalabo-Sikongo-Angola Road Project
In partnership with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Zambia has launched the ZMW 1 billion Kalabo-Sikongo-Angola road project. This development will foster trade between Zambia and Angola, opening new economic opportunities and enhancing regional integration.
Driving Zambia’s Growth
These ambitious projects reflect Zambia’s commitment to building a resilient and modernised infrastructure, diversifying its energy sources, and strengthening its economic position within the region. With investments across transport, energy, and mining, the country is laying a strong foundation for sustained growth and development.
As these projects unfold, they not only promise immediate job creation but also long-term benefits in trade efficiency, energy security, and economic integration. Zambia is truly on the move, building a brighter future for its people and its economy.
